Artificial Insemination IUI
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) at Virtus Fertility Centre Singapore
If you or your partner has been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, hostile cervical mucus, minor sperm abnormalities or other male fertility issues, IUI is often successful in achieving pregnancy. IUI can also be used in cases where semen has been frozen, which can be useful if your partner is absent (e.g. travelling for work) during the fertile time of your cycle.
Your fertility specialist will either perform this procedure inside our operating theatre or at our private consulting rooms. It is usually pain-free, and you should be able to return to work straight away.
IUI involves inserting the prepared sperm sample (from your partner or a donor) through the neck of the womb and into the uterus at close to the time of ovulation. This procedure can be performed during a natural menstrual cycle or with artificial hormone stimulation (i.e ovulation induction).
IUI Step by Step
- The IUI procedure starts by monitoring the woman’s cycle to determine the day of ovulation – this is often referred to as ovulation cycle tracking.
- Once the follicle is mature, ovulation either occurs naturally or is triggered by an injection of synthetic Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG).
- Finally, the prepared sperm is inserted directly into the uterine cavity using a very thin catheter. The discomfort experienced during this process is similar to a pap smear.

IUI Success Rate
Since IUI is a much simpler and less invasive procedure than an IVF cycle, it can be a good first option for fertility treatment with a good success rate. However, if you have had three or more unsuccessful attempts with IUI, or if you are aged 35 or over, you are more likely to have a greater chance of success with IVF.
Cost of IUI
