Egg Freezing
Depending on the type of cancer and your treatment plan, your doctor may recommend freezing eggs for future use through IVF treatment.
Elective egg freezing (EEF) allows you to preserve your eggs when they are still healthy and of good quality. This enables you to conceive later when natural conception might be difficult or unlikely.
The eggs are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen using vitrification or fast-freeze technology, and they can be stored for many years without little or no deterioration. When you are ready to start a family, the frozen eggs are removed from storage, warmed, and then fertilised using a single sperm to create an embryo using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in our laboratory.
In Singapore, there isn't a specific age limit for women who want to freeze their eggs for medical reasons, unlike EEF for non-medical reasons, where only women under the age of 37 are allowed to do so.
The guidelines may vary depending on individual health circumstances, such as cancer treatments or other conditions affecting fertility. Hence, it is important to consult a fertility specialist to assess egg quality and overall reproductive health.
